The Standard for Ethical Trade Audits is SMETA - SEDEX Member Ethical Trade Audits. Audits conducted by SMETA are based on ETI Codes, which include supply chain implementation of Environment, Health & Safety, Business Ethics, and Labour Standards.

ETI Code is based on International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions regarding labour practises, and URS conducts SMETA Audits in India. SEDEX Audit requirements are based on ETI principles and include:

There is no forced, indentured, or involuntary prison labour, and individuals are free to quit their employers with reasonable notice.

Workers have the ability to form or join trade unions on their own volition. Employers must adopt a nondiscriminatory, open attitude towards labour unions and worker representatives.

Conditions of Employment are Safe and Clean: To satisfy the requirements of SEDEX Audits, a safe and hygienic working environment must be provided for employees. There must be precautions taken to prevent accidents and injuries.

No child labour shall be utilised: The requirements of SEDEX Audits based on the SMETA Standard must prohibit the employment of children. Children and adolescents under the age of 18 are prohibited from working at night or in hazardous conditions.

Minimum The minimum wage is paid: To comply with SEDEX Audit requirements, wages and benefits paid to a worker must at a minimum satisfy national legal standards or industry benchmark standards.

Working hours are reasonable: Generally, it is not permitted to work more than 48 hours per week and working hours must conform to national laws and collective agreements. All extension must be optional.
