SA 8000: The Standard Requirements: A Brief History

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) CEPAA (Council on Economic Priorities Accreditation Agency) launched SA8000 in 1997. The Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000) standard is the first of its kind internationally. SA8000 is grounded in international human rights' conventions (International Labour Organization, International Declaration of Human Rights, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) while also meeting the requirements of applicable domestic laws. The intention is to secure fundamental protections for all production workers.

What is basis of SA8000 Certifification Critera for Audit in India

The SA8000 Standard is a certification that can be audited that encourages businesses to develop, maintain, and implement socially acceptable practices in the workplace. It was developed in 1989 by Social Accountability International, which was formerly known as the Council on Economic Priorities, by an advisory board comprised of companies, trade unions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other civil society organizations.

The criteria for the SA8000 were developed from a variety of industry and corporate codes in order to create a standard that is universally applicable for social welfare compliance. The earlier versions of the standard from 2001, 2004, and 2008 have been used as a foundation for the most recent (2014) version. [

The SA8000 standard for management systems is a management standard that is modelled after the ISO standards. In order to meet the requirements of the criteria, facilities that want to obtain and keep their certification will need to do more than simply comply with the standard. Facilities that are interested in being considered must incorporate it into their management practises and demonstrate that they continue to comply with the standard.
